Hello SJRA,

Next weekend is the annual Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) where Scouts from around the world get on the air to talk with each other and see what ham radio is about. There are hundreds of locations around the country where local radio clubs and Scout units get together for the weekend to participate.

Locally we're having a small camp-out in Pine Hill for the weekend and will be on the air as K2TD starting around noon on Saturday through 8 Sunday morning. Most of our activity will be on HF, but there will also be Scouts on the K2UK 168.865 repeater. I'd like to ask that if an SJRA member is in their shack next weekend, could they please tune to the K2UK repeater and talk with a Scout. There will be periods when we're not on the air due to other camp activities, but every year I've done a JOTA, Scouts have been up all night long anxious to get on the radio and talk to someone.

What should you talk about with a Scout? Well, they probably have never been on the air before and might be a bit shy, so ask them what rank they are, if they are working on any merit badges, etc. If you were in scouting, definitely talk to them about some of your experiences. I'm sure there are members of SJRA who obtained Eagle... the younger Scouts really appreciate words of wisdom and encouragement from Eagles!

We would also welcome visitors to the site.

Questions? I am not on the mailing list, so please email me privately: bob at applegate.org
