I’m inclined to think along the same lines as Rick but probably with a twist. Something fishy is afoot here.
1. This tower was guyed, single gauge (like Rohn 45 or something along those lines), not the self-supporting type shown in the NY Post and other articles stock photo of a radio tower. It didn’t appear to have any other services leasing space on it. I only see an STL at about 150’ up aimed at the studio back in the town of Jasper, AL.
2. It’s out in the middle of a pine forest sandwiched between a poultry processor and a sewage treatment plant and those are some distance away. There is no paved access. Cutting one set of guys, dropping this tower, and gutting the transmitter shelter would not draw any attention from anyone nearby. Steel radio tower and old 1KW AM transmitter gear won’t get you much at the scrap yard and the towers will stand out like a sore thumb. Last time I took stuff to a scrap yard in NJ a couple years ago I had to present my DL which they scanned and logged before I got paid. All I had was some scrap wire and some UPS batteries.
3. The station has reportedly been off the air several times in the last few years due to tower maintenance issues.
4. Brett Elmore, the current GM pictured in the news stories, is known locally as “The One-Armed Bandit”. He was the station owner from 2008-2017 until he became insolvent and couldn’t pay debts. The current station owner hired him as GM and his brother as a DJ in 2018.
5. Someone was asleep at the switch. When the signal went off the air, the GM, owner, or chief engineer should have picked up on it within an hour or less.
I smell inside job. Someone was owed money or maybe just wants revenge. Or maybe the station owner wanted it off the air. I thought I read the site wasn’t insured and they were trying to start a Go Fund Me page to collect money but maybe there’s other insurance involved.

Sounds like the work of "scrappers" to me.
