Gentlemen,
As a very worried 50+ year member of ARRL, I write to you in opposition to some of the items on the agenda for the January 2024 Directors Meeting. First, I oppose the new attempt to make changes to the Directors' Code of Conduct (Rule 46). This type of move was attempted a few years ago and was roundly opposed by the Membership of the League (including me) and some of the Directors. The ARRL exists for its members (and amateur radio operators of the United States, in general) with the Directors being OUR voice in matters at the League. Any tampering of any kind with the communication between the Directors and the members that they represent goes against EVERYTHING the League has always stood for. My first question directed to those proposing the change is: What do you have to hide? In today's world where transparency is the word used most often when talking about government meetings, I find it hard to believe that MY ARRL feels that it has to hide things from me THAT AFFECT ME! I ask that the Directors vote against this measure. Secondly, I agree that those members who bought an extended subscription to the printed form of QST be given what they paid for - printed copies. If they wish to switch over to digital QST, that should be their choice, without having to pay more. Thirdly, it has been noted in some circles that the current Chief Executive Officer has "told staff that ARRL was now a donor-centric rather than a member-centric organization", which I totally oppose. This sounds like OUR LEAGUE is ripe to be sold to any person, organization or corporation with the finances in hand. You talk about Code of Conduct questions? I am a proud League member and will be for the rest of my life. I am occasionally a donor either financially or of my time. I shout out that I am a MEMBER, with no mention of my meager donations. If someone wants to be a donor, it should be applauded, but not at the cost of the donors running the show (because they are donors). I hope you will all take my comments to heart, for the sake of OUR ARRL.
