[SJDXA] Fwd: K1USN Happenings 8/7/2020

Here's the news from club K1USN which I belong to and visit when I go to Massachusetts.
I thought you might like to see what is happening there. K1USN is a very active club.
They used to be on the USS Salem until politics got in the way.
Now they have a clubhouse with antennas and several stations within,
And (pre-virus) Saturday breakfast gatherings at a local restaurant nearby.

>
> Wireless Rig Control for Mobile Devices
>
> Description: Piglet is a device that interfaces amateur radios to the popular logging app HamLog on Apple’s iOS and Mac operating systems and Google's Android operating system. HamLog is a full featured logging app that’s been in constant development since March 2009.
>
> [image.png]
>
> The Piglet as well as HamLog was designed for amateur radio operators that take their radios out of the shack, to parks, hotels and mountain tops but still prefer a full-featured, software based logging experience.
>
> The Piglet device uses Wi-Fi, to expose its built-in serial port via a network connection and is powered via a coaxial DC connection. The Wi-Fi connection can either be Ad-Hoc, Infrastructure or, with recent firmware changes, an autonomous Wireless Access Point so it can operate stand-alone, without the need for an existing wireless network.
>
> It includes a custom milled, silk screened enclosure. Rig support includes popular radios from Elecraft, Yaesu, Icom and Kenwood with new radios being added as they’re tested.
>
> BTW, current list price for a Piglet is $99.99/ea so this is a real bargain!

> HZ1AB Project 2020
> [image.png]
>
>
> Many of us had an opportunity to contact the HZ1AB station over the years. For many of us it was a chance to receive our first QSL card from Saudi Arabia!
>
> This current project sounds like a real "Labor of Love of Ham Radio"!
>
>
>
> HZ1AB QSL PROJECT
> HZ1AB in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia was an active station from mid-1947 until October 2004. During these 57 years of active operation, hundreds of thousands of QSO’s were made from the station, and a huge collection of QSLs was amassed over the years. It is estimated that some 160 operators logged QSO’s from HZ1AB. One continually active operator from 1978 to 1996 was Walt Marshall, W7SE, an employee of Aramco. Walt had the motivation and sense of purpose to embark on a project to preserve thousands of QSL cards that had accumulated at the station in Dhahran since 1947. Being an accomplished woodworker, Walt built special cabinets to house the cards. When Walt retired in 1994, he packed the cabinets containing the cards along with their household goods that were shipped home to Laramie, WY. Those unique cabinets and some 175,000 QSLs remain at the home today.
>
> As the years went by, Walt continued to be an active DXer and contester from Wyoming. In 1989, he was a member of the 3B7RF DXpedition to St. Brandon, and in 2014 he was a volunteer at WRTC. Sadly, however, Walt became a Silent Key in August 2019. Before his passing, he asked his XYL, Dolores, to “have the Saudi cards sent to Austria”. Of course, Dolores had no idea of such a place, or how to handle such a formidable task. She called on one of their long-term friends and HZ1AB operator, George, K5KG, for help.
>
> Following a bit of research by K8DSS, a QSL archiving organization, Dokufunk.org*, in Vienna was located. Dokufunk was contacted about the HZ1AB QSL collection, and they willingly agreed to accept the cards. Upon receiving the cards, they will register, file, and store the collection but, unfortunately, they are not able to pay the cost of shipping. Funds would have to be secured to pay for the shipment.
>
> In July 2020, K5KG/George and N7WY/Bob, N7MJ/Jack and W8MYL/Roy met with Dolores at her home and undertook the job of removing the HZ1AB QSLs from Walt’s cabinets, and packing them in shipping cartons for the journey to Austria. It is estimated that this shipment contains 175,000 cards and weighs approximately 1200 pounds.
>
> Our team is working with a shipping company that will handle the documentation and logistics of the shipment. Based on their quote, we realize that the cost will be in excess of $2,000.
>
> On behalf of Walt, W7SE (SK), our project team is asking for donations to help pay the packing and shipping costs. We are appealing to ex-HZ1AB operators, and anyone who has an appreciation for preserving this collection. If you worked HZ1AB in years past and sent a QSL card, there is a good chance that your QSL is in this collection. All QSLs that were handled by QSL manager, K8PYD, are also contained in the collections.
> If you wish to donate, please send via PayPal to K5KG at K5KG.COM mailto:K5KG at K5KG.COM , or a check to George Wagner, K5KG, 5113 Higel Ave., Sarasota, FL 34242.
> All donations will be recognized and much appreciated for this worthy project.
>
> 73, George Wagner, K5KG
>
> *Dokufunk.org - The Research and Documentation Center for the History of Radio Communications and the Electronic Media is the world's biggest organization to collect, save, research and present whatever relates to the history of radio communications, particularly amateur radio and broadcasting. Among other QSL collections, they house the W6KG/W6QL Colvin and Danny Weil, VP2VB collections.

> National Contest Journal is published six times per year and is dedicated to covering the competitive contesting aspects of amateur radio. Each issue is loaded with information of interest to contesters (and DXers, too) from casual observer to hardcore competitor. There is something for everyone, from little pistol to big gun.
>
> Published continuously since 1973, National Contest Journal is the place where you can learn about some of the latest innovations in contesting and read stories about contesters in action around the world. However, you don’t have to consider yourself to be a contester to enjoy reading NCJ.
>
> Contest operators build some of the largest and most effective ham radio stations in the world, and they develop some of the most efficient operating techniques heard on the air. Much of the information in NCJ, like that pertaining to antenna system design and equipment improvements, is valuable to a broad range of ham radio enthusiasts.
>
> Each issue of NCJ is packed with great information. You will find stories of contest DXpeditions, reviews of new equipment, new books and software. Looking for contest operating tips or station construction details? NCJ has them. As a major voice of the contesting community, NCJ includes letters from readers, commentary, photos, humor, proposals for new rules, and prophecy — all delivered in a friendly, easy-to-read style.

> Times change and so does ARRL. For decades, joining ARRL meant simply receiving QST every month. But a single publication cannot truly represent the diversity of such a large membership. So over time ARRL introduced many newsletters dedicated to different audiences. Today, we can sign up for many specialty publications, such as:
>
> * The weekly ARRL Letter
> * The bi-weekly ARRL Contest Update
> * The monthly ARES E-Letter
> * News from your Division Director and Section Manager
> * W1AW Bulletins (e.g., weekly propagation forecast, DX, and other

>
> It's worth noting that th section news has been jointly produced by Phil, K9HI, Assistant Section Manager and Tom, K1TW, Section Manager.
>
> BTW, did I mention that the ARRL offers a free e-mail forwarding service? You can signup to have "your call" @http://arrl.net forwarded to your regular e-mail account.
>
> One huge benefit is that when a Ham offers to give you their e-mail address when you are not in a position to write anything down; all you need to remember is their callsign and then add the @http://arrl.net !

>
> Tnx for sharing, Bob.
>

> Hi Pi....here is the information regarding the construction of the ZS6BKW antenna that I recently built and have in service. With the aid of the radio's (Kenwood TS-440 AT) internal tuner I have easily loaded this antenna on 75,40,20 15 & 10...and I think I tried it on 17 as well but haven't made a contact. The analyzer also dips nicely around 51.1 MHz, so it would probably tune on most of 6m as well, but I don't a radio set up to operate on 6m. On 10m the VSWR was flat around 29.2 Mhz....although a horizontal antenna for repeater use isn't ideal by any means. Nevertheless the tuner took care of things "down the band".
>
> This antenna is constructed as a center feed dipole. 46'10" each leg, fed with 39'2" of "crappy brown stuff". For the elements, I used 14 ga stranded copper wire....still using up wire that I acquired when Sigma went out of business. For the balanced feed I used 16ga window line. It has been my observation that the 16ga works better and lasts longer in these kind of applications than the 18 ga. equivalent. The random coax attaches directly to the window line. I'm not sure if there is a minimum length recommended...I used about 60 feet. I did construct a coil at the feed point as shown in the video, as I typically have always done with dipoles over the years. A simple step, that works great.
>
> There are several You Tube videos but far and away the best one I saw can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbXmAcf9MmI For the center insulator I used an Alpha Delta end connector with #10 stainless hardware and lugged wires.
>
> I will also include a link for the homebrew end insulators I used. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjYIrVxrDt8 I used scrap pieces of PVC and stiff wire that I sitting around the shed, added a swivel on each end, and they work great. the only mod I made was bringing the stiff wire all the way thru and bending the tips over the end of the PVC so it's own pressure would help keep it in place. What I like about this is how it allows the end of the antenna to be left hanging free, which eliminates the guess work of how much extra wire to allow for soldering to itself around a ceramic insulator. Makes tweaking any antenna a breeze, although the ZS6BKW worked perfectly when cut to the dimensions I listed.
>
> I have worked several European stations using between 50-100 watts as well as 2 stations in New Zealand. I was able to work the west coast during Field Day.
>
> All in all I am satisfied with this antenna. It would probably be useful for portable operations as well, as it is shorter than a typical G5RV. Didn't try it as a slop dipole or inverted V, but I wouldn't discount the possibilities.
>
> I guess that should do it OM. I can't take credit for the design, but as the saying goes, If you steal one idea it's plagiarism. If you steal lots of ideas it research.
