Post note. I heard direct from Ken.  His flight was 40 minutes after the doomed flight. They were held in Addis for 90 minutes and only told that it was a traffic delay.  He didn’t find out what happened until he got to Zambia. He was quite shocked but he is safe.  
The concern was that although the doomed flight was heading to Nairobi Kenya and Ken was heading to Zambia,  it was possible that Nairobi could have been a transit point enroute to Zambia.  In any case, Ken is safe in Zambia.
