SJDXA MEMBERS,
This has not been finalized so please do not publicize this. I’m just looking for POTENTIAL volunteers for now. Thanks.

I have been asked if I would be interested in taking over the Yasme logs for all of Lloyd W6KG and Iris W6YL. I submitted a proposal to the Yasme Foundation and they will make a final decision at their board meeting in April at Visalia.
For those who aren’t that familiar with Lloyd and Iris, here are links with some info.

the famous husband and wife team, Lloyd Colvin, W6KG (SK), and Iris Colvin, W6QL (SK), began what they called the “Yasme Round the World DX-Pedition” under the auspices of the Yasme Foundation. Over the next almost 30 years, the Colvins would eventually operate from over 200 DXCC countries. Yasme volunteers served as their QSL manager, issuing hundreds of thousands of distinctive Yasme QSL cards.

Supported by a sizable bequest from the Colvins’ estate in 1998, Yasme’s activities today are conducted by a Board of Directors made up of volunteers who hold or have held responsible positions in business, law and technical areas.

Not many cards are requested anymore. The bulk of their DXpeditions ran from 1976-1990. All of the logs are paper. They are stored in a file cabinet in California. They estimate that they would fill 15-20 bankers boxes and cover around one million QSOs. They would supply all of the blank cards as well.
My proposal was to take the paper logs and proceed to scan them into PDF Format. Then save them to a media like CD’s DVD’s thumb drives with backups. Once each log is scanned, and the resulting files are confirmed to be OK, the paper logs would be tossed.
To do this, we will need volunteers to do the scanning. Steve KWR has already offered but as you may well imagine, this will be a huge project, but I feel it is an important one in order to preserve the history of two of our DXpedition icons, Lloyd and Iris Colvin.

This would be an “all hands on deck” project. Many hands make light work. If you can scan to PDF, let me know. We would set up a specific uniform process so everything would be the same. If you do not have the ability to scan, we can use proof readers who can take a resulting scan on a media format (CD, DVD, thumb drive) and compare it to the paper log for accuracy (make sure all pages are scanned and readable) before the paper log is tossed.

I have gotten permission from Bob Wick N2HM to temporarily store the paper logs at the site while we work on the project. So although this will be a big project and there will not be a specific deadline, we will want to clear the storage space in a reasonable and timely manner. I promised Bob that this would only be temporary.

Yasme did tell me that they would cover all shipping expenses. I don’t see any other serious expense. But I suppose if we did discover that we needed funds, we could ask Yasme to assist. They may even have some volunteers to assist with scanning in California, but that still would need to be discussed.

Since the 3Y0Z DXpedition aborted, this seemed to be a great SJDXA project to fill in the time before they try again.

If you can volunteer to scan logs, let me know.

We won’t know if this will happen until after Visalia in April. So please do NOT make any announcements or other discussion outside our group at this time.

73. Bob Schenck, N2OO
