I was going to send this directly to John, K2ZA. But while I was at it, I thought everyone would benefit from this video. 

Another way to install a PL259 coax connector onto RG-8 or RG-213 coaxial cable. 

This is how how one of the top contest station owners does it (Tim K3LR). It solders the coax shield to the OUTSIDE of the PL259. Eliminates any chance of a short and is more stable. 

I'm not necessarily saying this way is better, but it does have its' advantages.
