The only licensed station in Ethiopia is ET3AA. I happen to be their QSL Manager. This station, which is a club station for students at the Addis Ababa Institute of Technology had a mentor. He was Sid ET3SID but Sid became SK a few years ago. In 2011 while Sid was still with us, Dave K3LP and Paul N6PSE led a group to Ethiopia to operate and to do a VE session where they gave (as I recall) over 30 license tests to the students. Some even passed their Extra. This was done to hopefully encourage Ethiopia to license them since they would have a USA license. But after Sid passed away, that effort slowed. Dave and Paul left a Yaesu FT450D at the station which became the student's only transceiver. (Some visitors bring in their own rigs but take them with them when they leave). Recently, the FT450D club radio died. Ken K4ZW, who frequently visits the students and the station brought it back a couple of months ago and sent it to Yaesu for repair. Yaesu just deemed the radio as unrepairable.
Gigaparts has offered a new FT450D for $500.00. There is a big problem. Bringing in new radio equipment to Ethiopia requires a 120% import duty. So a $500 radio becomes a $1200 expense.
Ken and I are looking for ways to pass the hat to cover the purchase. We have a few hundred $ committed so far. I would like to pass the hat among SJDXA members. All in an effort to keep the students station on the air.
I would like to do this in the background. Not for a public announcement of any sort.
I will collect funds here via my n2oo at comcast.net PayPal account. Send as a friend.
Thanks for your consideration.
