I just wanted to give you an update on our successful "radio replacement" at
the ET3AA Club Station at the Addis Ababa Institute of Technology. As I
mentioned, ET3AA is the only licensed station in Ethiopia at this time and
it was extremely important to get their broken radio replaced in order to
keep them on the air, and keep them interested in ham radio! With the
assistance of a few INDEXA Eboard members, some members from the South
Jersey DX Assn, Ken Clearbout K4ZW and some of his friends, and finally
GigaParts in conjunction with Dennis K7BV and Yaesu who gave us a serious
discount and speedy delivery of a new replacement FT450D, the "students" at
ET3AA are back on the air! To all who responded to our "pass the hat"
request, we just want to say THANK YOU!

I cannot tell you how well your "contributions" worked!

Ken K4ZW is on his way home now after passing through ET3 land on a trip to
9Q and back. During his 2 visits to the station, he repaired their
amplifier, repaired a coax switch, and also installed a new RBN node at the
station which was sponsored by the Yasme Foundation.

Follows is Ken's email to me and Steve Molo KI4KWR at GigaParts which
briefly sums it up, and has a couple of quick videos to look at.

Hi Steve - perfect timing. I got back from the club station a few hours
ago. The radio is on the air! I got the amplifier fixed too and, we
discovered a problem in the antenna switch and fixed it. There is a new
group of students who joined the club. It was a mad rush to the radio once
I pronounced it working! They jumped right in and started operating on 15
SSB. Here are some video clips and pictures.

I need to get them some new headphones. It's hard to pick out stations from
the radio speaker.

I can't thank you and Bob enough for your support. I wish you could have
been there to see their happiness, that the station was back on the air.

And here is part of an email sent to me from Ken:

It was a fantastic afternoon getting everything running again. I've done a
lot of cool things in this hobby. This ranks right up there. Days like
today make all the work worth it. You've been a big supporter as well.
Thank you very much! And let the contributors know about our success. Feel
free to share the links from the previous e-mail with them.
