Thanks to all operators participating in the CW WW 160M contest this past
weekend. Special thanks to the operators who endured and persisted through
the grueling overnight hours. All operators put in a tenacious effort under
some of the most difficult band conditions that N2CW has encountered in its
12 year operating history from the WSC station (WYRS 90.7 FM) at West
Creek.
I do not have the log at home as I did not have a flash drive at the close
of the contest to copy an ADI file and report actual operating statistics.
Our raw score calculated by the log was approx. 180,000 points.
Operations Summary
Friday afternoon just before 2200Z a line of thunderstorms moved to and just
off the east coast. Although the heavy rain and storm conditions dissipated
at the coast line, we were plagued with intense QRN for nearly 5 hours
that resembled summertime time conditions on 160M. We struggled from the
start of the contest working stations in PA, NY and a few other nearby
states. The static crashes so unrelenting and deafening that we managed
just about 160 QSOs in the first three hours. The severe QRN began to
subside by 0400Z and we had a run of EU stations before EU sunrise between
approx. 0500-0600Z. We began to accumulate more distant states with KH6CC
calling in on our run frequency. At our sunrise on Saturday morning was
had raw score of some 80,000 points.
Saturday overnight band conditions seemed to be more or less typical for
February. We needed DX zones so the run station focused on NE transmit and
beverage antenna for mults. The mult station pursed anything it could
hear and accumulated bonus DX zones. But way of my impression, it seemed
conditions were less than favorable. The EU stations were lacking and we
failed to work or hear many of the western Candian provicences that we work
as a matter of routine in past contests. We managed to work all states
except UT ( MT, WA and NV were also missing, but I can't recall if the mult
station logged them). The mult station pickup up needed DX zones
throughout the night. Only at EU gray line did we once again achieve a run
of EU mults from the run station. I suppose the scores from other east
coast stations will reveal the actual band conditions.
We topped off operations Sunday morning with W2ARP hearing N2OO in VK6
land at gray line Sunday morning.
Everyone put in much effort this year. We achieved a respectable score all
should be proud of our score under challenging conditions.
Special thanks to Marty, W2CG who took time to setup the computers and Pete,
KU2C for use of the K3 and amp and Jeff, KB2M for use of the K3 and to Bob,
N2HM for his generosity in accommodating N2CW operations. Thanks to all who
posted N2CW in the wee hours of the overnight and worked N2CW during the
contest. A speedy recovery to Chuck, N2CCW who sustained a concussion at
home Saturday.
Thanks to all operators ( If I missed a call be advise --- I was not present
in the days light hours to record calls):
