Here is a summary of the progress made by the antenna crew in the marsh on Saturday:

1. All beverages have been walked and repaired. Many large trees were down over the wires.
2. All beverages now have 9:1 transformers and feedlines back to the station....essentially ready to go. BUT none have been tested.
3. Regarding the 160 TX array: The delta loop and two sloping dipole driven elements are on the tower. The pull rope for the center of the SW sloper is stuck in a tree and must be replaced. Spacing of the delta loop from the tower needs to be adjusted. About 4 hours of work and testing remain to make this antenna operational.

4. No work was done on the inverted L.

Next scheduled work party is the day of the Stew Perry TBDC event, Saturday December 29 at 9 a.m.

John Crovelli

Subject: [SJDXA] Update on Saturday

SJDXA members;
There was a crowd at the “Site Activity” Saturday.
The W2GD crew (W2GD, W1GD, W2CG, W2NO, K2TW, K2XT, KU2C) worked all day on re-erecting the transmit array and walking beverages.
New coax feeds were run inside the NE PVC tube since 2 of the 3 that were in there tested bad after removing the coax connectors.
All beverage coax from inside the shed was tested and repaired (by W2NO) as necessary. Some had been under water, some not.
I will defer to W2GD ‘s full report when he puts one together.

Inside the N2CW shack:
On Friday, W2OB, W2ARP, N4XAT and N2OO went to the site to test coax feed lines (see our previous report). While there we discovered that one of the two amplifier 208 volt AC outlets was dead. On Saturday Lance N2OZ worked on this and repaired it. It had to do with the bus inside the panel and probably a re-routing of one of the phases when repairs were made to the power lines after the storm. All fixed! FB Lance!

On Saturday, W2ARP and N2OO completely cleaned up the N2CW station desk AND overhead cabinets. We pulled out equipment no longer needed and set up the radio and amp (nicely). (Still have a few things to do, but not much).
N2HM (who was there all day cleaning out his shed AND many other things) will be taking a couple of the OLD PC monitors to the recycle center for us. Also, the old 386 PC that we used only rarely. We found a few things that we can try to sell at some point to add cash to our “new amp” kitty. We’ll discuss at our next meeting.
We also found 3 more plaques that were in the overhead cabinets, and hung them on the wall. And, we hung a file/booklet holder on the wall for easy access to any files or manuals. There is another one there if needed.
We also gave Danny W2NO our 5 spare rotor controllers for him to test and repair. Danny has also offered to repair our T2X rotor (cost of parts). We’ll give that to him next time we see him since I had it taken it home to send off to Norm’s but never got around to doing it. TNX DaNo! We will GIVE one of them to OBARC (after repaired) because we ALSO discovered that one OBARC rotor controller (used on either their tower trailer rotor or their VHF FD tower) was in a storage trash can in the shed that got salt water into it. W2ARP cleaned it off with fresh water. I have it and will remove the cabling. It is otherwise TRASH.
Finally, in the late afternoon, (N2HM, N2OO and W2NO) even helped a man (happened to be N2OO’s neighbor) and the man’s lady friend remove her lost jet ski ramp that had floated out in the marsh behind the station in the hurricane. It was a BIG heavy float maybe about 12’ x 8 ‘ (with some water in it). It was “lifted” using “a lot of ingenuity and appropriately applied leverage” onto a van designed for carrying plate glass. Wish I took pictures as it was quite a thing to see.

N2OO will be “lending” a complete PC to the N2CW station. It is running Vista (we might upgrade to Windows 7) and has WinEQF, N1MM, DX4WIN all installed. We can add an Ethernet cable to the router under the desk and have internet access as well. It has a widescreen monitor too. It has very little loaded on it, so it should run fine. It even has a serial port! (It has run fine here, it was my shack PC but I recently upgraded and it is no longer being used) I will also bring a decently operating Kodak printer for it which might also be handy for us to have in the shack.

N4XAT and N2OO will be coming to the station on Thursday to operate W2WSC/WSC. I left my netbook there with N1MM in it. If anyone would like to join us, feel free to stop in. Bring donuts! J

See ya' in the Pileups!
73!
