SJDXA Members;
This past weekend, our club house and station was occupied by a group of Boy
Scouts who learned all about ham radio in the annual Boy Scout Jamboree On
The Air (JOTA).
N2CW was active making 145 QSO's.
The scouts set up an overnight encampment at the site as you can see in the
attached photos. (I estimate that we had about 15-20 scouts and leaders
participating)
Bob Wick N2HM went way out of his way to make this a rewarding experience
for the scouts. He brought in his vintage Heathkit gear!
All in all, we had 4 stations more or less QRV. Our FT1000MKV, OBARC's
FT950, N2HM's FT767GX, and the Heath Mohawk gear.
Chuck KC2SPL taught two 3 hour radio merit badge lessons, and scouts took
turns operating the radios (under supervision). Look at photo 1539 and
notice the 40 meter dipole that was built by the scouts as part of their
merit badge training.
This joint Old Barney ARC and SJDXA activity was a rousing success. Maybe we
have finally tapped into some youth for amateur radio in our area?
This event was initiated by Ryan Thorn KC2YAC, who is a Boy Scout and member
of Old Barney ARC.
Thanks to all participants! We could have had more help of course. But all
in all it went quite well. They are already planning to do it again next
year!
See ya' in the Pileups!
73!
