This should be magnetic, not static.
As for the antennas, mine are all disconnected and grounded... Course we 
had two lines of heavy thunderstorms go through around 3:00 or 4:00AM 
(in the coldest week of the year?). Our half a foot of snow is now bare 
dirt, but the ditches are full. 3 and 4 nights ago it hit zero. We had a 
high today in the mid 40's.
The antennas? I haven't had enough ambition to test any of the theories 
by hooking them back up.

Time to point those antennas North and get on CW!
