OM's,
The classic SB-200 conversion to 6 mtrs was developed by W2UTH in 1968 and
was published in QST. It is a quick and easy way to get 500-600 watts output
key down on 6 , and yes, you can leave 4 other HF bands in place. The amp
runs hot, the 572B's are pushed to the hilt and without ever having put the
amp on a spectrum analyzer, I'm not sure how clean it is on 6 mtrs.
However, 50 watts output of my old Hallicrafters HA-6 transverter into that
SB-200 conversion I did back in 1978-79 time frame was just what I needed to
complete WAS on 6 from South Florida to work KH6 and KL7 from the farthest
spot east of those 2 rare dx states on 6 mtrs !
I have since put the SB-200 back into the 5 band HF mode and continue to
consider converting my SB-220 to a 6 mtr monoband amp. However, each time my
Ten Tec Centurion goes belly up (as it is now) I keep dropping the idea of
converting my SB-220 and thinking how nice it is to have a good spare HF amp
without having to pull apart my Collins S-line to use the 30L-1 on my main
HF station.
73,
Dave, K2DP
