Im not sure how long you have been active on 6m but
Yes they are common especially with the Es to F2 Hookups over the  Pacific
seen them many times before at different times of the year
And especially back on the decline of the past several cycles 
If its possible for you to ask some of the guys who have been active on the 
 band
since the early 80's like myself I suggest you do so since you doubt  me
