I know the station of which you speak in 5 land, I won't mention his call,
because if you hear him you know him. His signal is so wide that he usually
has three or four stations calling him across a spread, I have to tune up
and down to hear them calling him but he is so wide I can hear him the whole
time!!! Every time someone mentions his signal is wide he blames your
receiver.
I added filtering to my 847 and combined with the DSP I have had no problems
at all with crowded band conditions. The Inrad filters make a world of
difference. But now and then you get someone with a "barn door" width
signal that you can't ignore.

You won't have to wait for the cycle to peak. There should be many
openings, spring and fall as well as sporadic E. You just have to be
listening at the right time. Even the last peak which wasn't all that
great had many openings world wide. IOW you could hear all continents at
the same time. Of course as the cycle peak nears the number of opening
should increase. Last spring I have pages of DXin the log book while
using nothing more than my AV-640 vertical.

I have to admit that I miss the big Yagi at 115'. It's about ready to
go back up, but I have to get the new mast into the tower first.
With two, 24' lengths of 2" DOM and the 7L C3i at 115' that puts the
rotator 33' below the top of the tower. I'd like to put the duo band
Diamond 144/440 vertical on top of the mast, but that would probably
last until the first thunderstorm.
As there are quite a few hams in the area who operate 6 QRO, one of
those new rigs with a super dynamic range would be really nice. Overload
has not been a problem with the 756 Pro on 6 so far, but there is a W or
K 5 that is broader than a barn door. I've never said anything to him
as I've head him go into a tirade about poor receivers when others
mentioned it. A ham just down the road is even louder, but we can
operate within about 6 KHz of each other. OTOH I'd appreciate that
dynamic range on 40 and 75 in the evenings.
