Hey! That reminds me, when I was a kid we actually had a "cutter" that
was in very good shape stored overhead in the small barn. We gave it to
my uncle (my mother's brother) as they still used a team of horses into
the 70's. although the majority of their work was done by his son and
grand sons with the big tractors, Clarance still cultivated beans the
first time through with the horses and a cultivator he could ride on.
It was some times comical as he'd get the horses headed down a half mile
long field and then fall asleep. When they'd get to the other end the
horses would just stand there until Clarence would wake up and get them
headed back. Then he'd go back to sleep. Doing that on a tractor was a
good way to get a bad case of what we called "cultivator blight" <:-))

If there is a job that requires fewer brain cells than cultivating beans
the first time through, I haven't found it yet.
Early one season (in the 50's) I was moving slowly across the field in
the heat and about half asleep. Suddenly there was a tremendous roar and
I spun around to look behind me while stomping on the brakes to minimize
the "cultivator blight". There was a huge cloud of dust forming with an
T-33 (or F-80) pulling up. He had to have been within a few feet of the
ground. He was probably laughing all the way back to the base.

If you really need to know, it was a rather bad case of "cultivator
blight" and it took me some time to find and get back lined up with the
proper rows before continuing on.
