The plain 551 (non D) did 10-15watts....

Your memory battery is going dead (watch style battery iirc!)...IF I
remember, keeping external power on (if the radio is running off 12V
external) keeps the settings ok.....worked a CW QSO one time on a 551 by
whistling into the mic on SSB (the other station noted a little chirp ;)
