That depends on whether it's full time 4WD or the kind you can turn on 
and off.  I have a 4WD SUV that is nearly 12 years old (also a 99) with 
almost 100,000 miles and it's been *almost* trouble free.  17" tires can 
be a bit pricey but can be found for $160 to $200 each and in the snow 
up here can be worth it. Gas mileage is between 18 and 20 mpg. Usually 
closer to 18. The problem is I drive so little any more the tires die 
from age instead of use.  They look really good, but when it  comes to 
the quarter test they have more tread than when new<:-))  They are 
cracked between the treads but you sorta expect that with tires that are 
about 8 years old with a very aggressive tread for snow.

I can change the brakes in less than 10 minutes by myself.
OTOH if it's in the drive mechanism it's about as pricey as working on 
any other transmission system.
