Karl,

 IMO,  I think you are just asking to much of 6 meters just yet.   YES you 
hear BIG stations working  openings, but  these guys are running  Large 
ANTENNAS some times arrays !

 not to mention amps,.........   Hang in there,....... we are STILL just 
coming up out of the bottom of a very LONG  dry spell,.......  Your time 
will come,....  you will be inundated
with contacts as the cycle improves.
