I've flown many hours behind a Lycoming IO-540, and I will always
believe I couldn't have flown behind a better engine. Aviation is a
very unforgiving hobby that requires that everything work
perfectly.... not 97% ..... but 100%.
I've also read about similar PA-23s carrying over twice the allowable
payload .... either a half-ton plus of drugs , or long distance fuel
bladders in the passenger seats, so these Pipers can over gross and
still have enough wing lift to complete the mission.
