Here are a set of papers on what broadcasters do for lightening
protection for AM/FM transmitter sites by Nautel. We build all of our
AM and FM sites to these standards and we haven't blown up any gear
since we started buying Nautel transmitters more than a decade ago.
We have an AM on 1390 into a 199 foot tower and 3 FM that are on
mountain tops in Colorado which is know to have lightening issues.
You will notice the extensive use of ferrite cores on mains wiring,
antenna feed lines and control cables. Ferrite cores present
significantly higher levels of inductance to common mode voltage
transients than does looping the wire a couple of times. You will
also note the use of a single point grounding system for all cables
entering the building. The use of ferrite cores and single point
grounding technique has been used for more than 40 years with
outstanding results.
