Connector? Yes, but LCD? I doubt it. I see the possibility of two
distinctively different problems. There is the slow frequency change
that works while fast does not, and the second is the off, or out of
range frequency which is unlikely to be related to the display or
frequency control knob or encoding.
One possibility: The LCD connectors which are usually a conductive
strip tend to drop segments on all that I've had go bad or the ones I've
seen go bad. I recommend that any one without the skills, never take
one of these apart. More likely it's one of the ribbon cables that use
the tiny, plastic, clamp connector, or a connection to the board.
Another prime candidate is the vfo knob encoder. Make sure the
connections to it are secure. Typically the errors I see from these is
similar to the problem described. A weak signal, from the encoder
caused by either dirt in the encoder or low voltage will do just what is
described. I don't know if this rig uses an optical or magnetic
encoder, but the problems are similar. In the optical encoder dirt/dust
or low voltage causes a low output. Spin the knob and you'll get no
output, but turn it slowly and it'll sometimes work BUT The off
frequency range indicates a problem some where else, such as the phase
locked loop.
Were it me (and it's not) I'd check all the connections between the
display and boards as well as between the control and board. Due to the
out of range frequency of operation, I'd reseat all boards, connectors,
and virtually anything in a socket. (and clean out any dust) . Doing
this does not come without some risk.
Good Luck,
