FYI
*Tomorrow morning I will jump on American and via Miami and
Antigua, reach Montserrat at 4:00.
**
*I have always been intrigued with the island ever since it
made the
news when the Soufriere Hills volcano erupted in '97 burying
the
island's capital, Plymouth, beneath tons of lava and ash. The
occasional hiccup by the still active site sends ash all
over the
island. 11,000 lived there before the blast, 8,000 left in
fear and now
the population is back up to around 5,000. From my
research, Montserrat
may be about the most unspoiled island in the Caribbean.
That is my
main reason to go, along with the CQ WW VHF contest this
weekend. I
will be on with a 4 element yagi and 600 watt linear for 50
Mhz and wire
antennae for the HF bands. It will be a modest operation at
best. But,
I will be on 60 and 30 meters and lots of 40 and 20 cw.*
**
*My call is VP2MSJ. I am at the QTH of Graham, VP2MDD, who
has a lovely
home overlooking the water and is in the shadow of the
volcano. He gets
lots of ash which he has to wash off, the roof, the drive,
etc. He has
a beautiful spot...check him out on QRZ.com and plan a trip.*
**
*Well, in any event, I'll be there until the following
Wednesday and
when the bands are slow, I will do some touring about the
place, hiking,
diving and taking lots of pix. *
**
*Lynn Schriner, W5FO, has handled my QSL chores for five
years, became a
silent key in May. Lynn loved working on QSL's - his and
mine. He had
accumulated some 30,000 over his ham career and of course,
with my crazy
schedule, his efforts were greatly appreciated. I sure do
miss him; we
would talk almost every day and he was usually exhorting me
to "go
somewhere so you can put me to work". He was a great guy
and great
friend, husband and father. So, I am going on a trip to
have fun but
also to honor Lynn's memory. *
**
*I am lucky to have 30 year friend, Jay Bromley, W5JAY, take
over the
QSL duties. I thank him in advance.*
**
*Sorry for this epistle, but I am ready and looking forward
to a very
relaxing week...if you hear my little peanut whistle signal,
give me a
buzz.*
**
*TKS es Vy 73!*
