[SixClub] 6M in ARES-RACES

I proposed DECADES ago in the last 80s that SIX meters be used for long haul
packets links...the gear was starting to become available then and 6m
coverage off a tower with a yagi or even a vertical would outdo a 220 or UHF
link..and you can run 9600 baud.....some "experts" scoffed at it...funny, I
don't hear the laughter anymore as I was proved right...
Besides, with TV 2 going away in MOST of the country as of 6/12, the noise
floor on 6 will be lower than ever!!! Good cheap 6mtr rigs (like Midland
XTRs and STI and IIs) are flooding the market and the prices are next to
nothing...put a 100watts packet digi up say 300ft with a 3 element yagi and
you will BLOW away a 220 or 440 link...and you can use 1/2 in or even RG8!!
Just make sure the radio has a GOOD noise blanker...a must for those days
when the static rises up...(like COLD DRY windy days)

NOW if we could only get a NATIONwide 6m bandplan...my 1.7Mhz split plan has
provision for 1Mhz split data full duplex channels.....anyone interested??

Received this recently - an interesting rise in the use of 6M for
ARES-RACES ... I have recommended that they look into surplus
commercial Low-VHF gear.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Several of the counties in northerrn Va including prince william
mine and fairfax have found 10w on 6m works in areas where
50+w on 2m using repeaters did not so using our idea of simplex
when possible we started playing with 6m most have 706 so we
played with ssb and it worked great but not all new techs are
gonna spend 1000$ so we looked at 6m and it work almost as
good as ssb most are using alinco dr m06t radios with 20w and
we can cover the areas that where at one time considered holes
where even the county 911 systems do not work!

So the short of it is 6m has gained in its uses we have added a
6m port to our aprs digi igate and to our winlink stations located
at my station which os why I'm looking for radios as I've run out.

Oh forgot no dern pager intermod on 6m a big plus up here

Hope this helps
