I love antenna discussions !!!
Yes, for a "specific objective"
( ie : max forward gain for a specific boom length )
there is a computer model that specifies a minimun number of elements.
If you are near the windload capacity of your tower or rotor, this
becomes a critical factor in your boom length / element count.
Now, I'll make a broader statement.
Other than windload considerations, having extra directors isn't a bad thing.
And if properly designed, can actually enhance some specification.
For example : to produce a wider bandwidth, or to change the chararistic of a
side or back lobe.
You just have to know what your unique requirements are and design an antenna
to match them.
The 50 foot boom antenna might look impressive on paper, but using it
exclusivly to monitor for openings could in some cases result in less
contacts.... not more.
