We have a hybrid and it's as quiet as a mouse...smell better too.
The only problem I've seen with electric cars besides the price (for the
real ones, not toys) it the lack of electricity to power accessories.
It's much like the "Water, water, every where and not a drop to drink"
although that may be an apt description for much of the Midwest after
yesterday and last night. There are flood warnings from a good portion
of souther Michigan almost all the way to Colorado. But at-any-rate,
our Hybrid which really does get over 45 MPG pretty much year around
with all around driving has a really anemic 12 volt system for powering
accessories such as the TM-V7A in my wife's car. I wanted to run direct
to the battery but as they thing is about large enough to start a small
lawn mower the dealer cautioned against the direct connection. So I'm
thinking of a relay so the radio will be powered directly from the
battery but dropped when the ignition is off. It wouldn't take long at
all to run that little battery down if you forget and leave the radio
on, which I've done too many times to count in my 4-Runner and it did
pretty much completely discharge that big battery. So I doubt the little
one would last long at all.

But, man are those solar cells expensive! OTOH they are getting the
range and load of those cars up to something useful. However even in
the sunny South West it's going to take a pretty hefty solar array to
fully charge a bank of batteries good enough for a 100 mile plus range
and haul a good load of groceries. Of course as we shift to using more
electricity the rates will go up accordingly as the grid is running
close to max capacity as it is.

Yup. Nuther population explosion coming as when people can't afford to
go any where there's almost an immediate rise in the birth rate.

Man! You have cheap gas. It's well past $4.00 (bout $4.12 to $4.20)
here. Of course any one in Europe will tell us who cheap we still have
it<:-))

OTOH you should try feeding a 470 Cubic inch Continental or even worse a
540 when the 470 burns about 14 gallons an hour. <:-))
No wonder my wife isn't complaining about the money for ham gear while I
stay home chasing DX.
