I have a 7L C3i at 115 feet, but unfortunately the boom trus came apart and
cropped down with one section laying on the driven element for my old TH-5
tribander. The other section broke off and ended up in the driveway. So
the project is to get the TH-5 down (so I can get the C3i down for repair.
Of course once I get that far the 144 and 440 arrays need to come down and
be remounted on the cross boom with good solid mounts instead of the U-bolts
through the booms. Just replacing those with saddle bolts would be an
improvement.
As for antennas, it normally doesn't take much of an antenna to work out on
six unless you are trying to beat the competition, or working weak signals.
I worked a guy down IIRC in Honduras who was testing his new rig on the
bench with just a piece of wire stuck into the SO-239 on the back of the
rig. The wire was laying on the bench.
Right now, 40 is my band of choice as it's behaving much like 20 does during
the sunspot cycle high.
Although sunspots are showing up for the next cycle now, we probably haven't
really reached the minimum yet. How deep and how long a minimum we will
have? No one really knows. HOWEVER solar storms can happen at any time
during a cycle and those either mean Aurora or enhanced propagation on six,
so don't give up on siz just because we are near a minimum.
I plan on using a plain old fashioned sloping dipole until I can get the
antennas repaired. I hope to put the TH-5 on a 50 or 60' 25G at the West
end of my shop and maybe a 3 or 4L 40 (probably a shorty 40) under the
6-meter antenna. The TH-5 should work better at half its present height
anyway.
