Welcome to the wonderful world of codepage translations. 

John, I suspect that that was intended to be a newline (hex 0D), but 
that through the vagaries of various MIME encodings and decodings, it
wound up as a control character in some folks' displays. Would you 
rebut or confirm this? 

I read my mail and news with text-based tools on a FreeBSD system, and 
so have different issues, not related to the newest singing-dancing-
hamsters GUI. 

Oh, and I run a 6M net: 

every Thursday night, 
50.200 USB, 
at 2000 Central time, 
from grid EM15gf. 

All are welcome to come play, and we do occasionally get some "DX" 
check-ins, for values of "DX" equivalent to "more than 30 miles away 
from OKC and Norman". 

See! I managed to get some 6M content in!
