The local ABC affiliate in Houston made a presentation last week to
members of BVARC www.bvarc.org regular membership meeting as to how
TV stations transmit news from the field to the station & out to the
public.. The presentation was made by hams on the staff of KTRK - TV
which is a network owned station & from commentary about digital, it
appears this is costing stations big bucks to run two transmitters 24/7..
Only 2 - 3 of the remote news units are digital equipped, they are
in the process of upgrading remote units, they brought out one of the
"non-digital" satellite trucks for demo purposes, the investment is
astronomical..!
I have several TV stations engineering dept dispatch frequencies on
my scanner & some behind the scenes talk between engineering & field
crews during the prime time 6 P.M. news is downright comical in that
digital causes more problems than it solves..
HOT TIP... Micro Center computer stores are selling digital to
analog converters that enable any lap top computer with analog video
cards to receive digital TV signals with not much more than a
dual-band VHF-UHF mobile antenna, the converter sells for less than $
60.00 & includes USB connections..
