The FT897 is not capable of drawing enough current through normal leads over 
a normal distance to make more than a noticeable drop let alone this much 
which means the meter can not be right unless there is some other place for 
the voltage drop to develop

If the 897D actually did draw that much it would be a smoking heap which 
means to me that either you have something between the battery and the radio 
that is allowing 6 meter RF to cause it to malfunction, or it's causing an 
erroneous reading from the volt meter.
