Plus polarization doesn't count for much on skywave signals, only on
line of sight and tropo. The much lower angle of radiation of the
vertical actually makes it a much more effective antenna than the
horizontal loop when they are at heights less than 1/2 wavelength.

with the vertical you have a 20db loss due to polarization
right from the start but if the band is open a contact is a contact.
