[SixClub] whats the best 6meter vertical gain wise

Hi Larry, list,
A couple of months ago I started looking into antennas to use on my 6m
repeater. I desire a DC grounded antenna for noise immunity (verses an
isolated antenna) and for lightning protection, with a low angle of
radiation. "Low" is relative in this discussion.
I considered the folded dipole, and stacks thereof, and quickly discarded
that idea due to high angles of radiation (some 75+/- degrees), and the
vertical tower space required for stacking (to lower the angle).
Looking around further on line and in some older antenna books (ARRL), I
found that the 1/2 wavelength over 1/2 wavelength (or 5/8 over 5/8) gives
promising patterns.
There are dozens of illustrations of J-poles for 6m use, many of a stacked
variety. At this point I've not built any of them, but that is my intention
in the coming weeks.
So, the short answer is look on line via your favorite search engine for a
"super j-pole" or stacked j-pole and see what strikes you. Provided the
antenna can be built inexpensively and give the pattern it should (less
than 50 or so degrees), you'll have a winner. You should also know that my
choice to do this is heavily influenced by my current stock of aluminum
tubing and my ability to weld it, and my interest in tinkering with antennas.
