The opening that you are talking about also seemed to elude me. I saw
all of the propagation that was going on and somehow I was unable to
make even one contact... I use a ICOM 706 MKIIG with a 3 element
cushcraft beam at 35 feet. I have noticed during my short experience
with 6 meters that the band is funny like that. Sometimes, the map
will show all kinds of contacts being made all around me and I can't
get in. Then other times, there isn't a contact to be seen and I'm
talking down to the Virgin Islands... sometimes you just gotta call CQ
and see what happens - or just tune around to see whats going on.....
Just my observations.
