I've used the IC706MkIIg since August 2003 on VHF / UHF, first as a base rig and later as my mobile rig. I now run a Yeasu 847 in the shack but I've never used a 857 or 897. I've also never used a Kenwood 2000.

The 706 is a fine mobile rig, one of the best, but as a base station when combined with large antennas I found it to suffer from too much interference from adjacent frequencies. This was mainly apparent during strong openings on 6 meters running beams like the M2 6M5X. The front end of the radio is just too open. Installing Icom's narrow ssb filter did help but you can't install the great Collin's mechanical or INRAD filters due to lack of space. I like the 847 much better in the shack.

When using the 706 with a limited antenna, mobile or maybe just a low loop on 6 meters, it works just fine. Actually a very sensitive radio with fine characteristics and easy to use. I have just installed one of K44AB's E Factor 2 meter / 432 loops on my 2004 Dodge Ram and although it seems to be working great on 2 meters I haven't found anyone on 432 Mhz to try yet. I'm using a Antron 6 meter hamstick mobile but I'm thinking of putting up a 6 meter loop for next summers vacation out west. Might try a little rover operation.

IMHO (yeah, I know I'm picky)
