Ben as an overview I run this radio and find that it is a great radio
overall. About a year ago the communications center I work for got a federal grant
to install some ham equipment (1500 dollars to be exact). I and the EM
director did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that the 857D offered the
most bang for the buck (including 100 watts on six). I was so impressed with
the features and ease of use (for a menu driven radio) that I also bought one,
selling my ft100D (the radio the 857D replaced). It is comparable to the Icom
706mkllg, and for much less money (at AES for example the Icom is 899.00 and
the 857D is currently 699.00). I get good signal reports on 6 meter (the area
mine sees the most use, I have an FT101 for HF) as well as 2/440. It also has a
cool display that has 16 color choices. If you have a specific questions feel
free to email me direct.
