Say Chris... I have an old unused Diamond 6 meter vertical. The sucker is
twenty something
feet long, with 5 or 6 foot radials. I have been on 6 since the '80s, but
never fooled with any modes other than CW and SSB.
What might I find on the 'vertical' modes?
Any activity?  Perhaps I'll put that stick up in the air!

Those GPs on Ebay are nicely built BUT they are not DC grounded...look at
one with a spectrum analyzer on a cool/cold dry day and watch the noise!
There is no place for it to drain except through the rcvr front end...OUCH!
A DC Grounded antenna will lower the noise on such days and makes a BIG
difference...especially if your rcvr does not have a Noise Blanker (and on
6/lowband commercial, that is pretty much mandatory!)
The Ebay GPs would make a good rptr xmit antenna on 6 but even then, if it
gets hit by lightning, say bye bye to the PA and likely the entire xmtr and
power supply. A halfwave vertical made out of 1/2in or smaller EMT and gamma
matched in the center would be a better choice (especially on rcv)...or make
a grounded GP and gamma match the vertical radiator..
(On 6, I like to do anything possible to keep the noise out....which is why
I use a Larsen NMO150 grounded 5/8wave 2m antenna on 6 FM mobile....works
better than the Larsen NMO47 or MNO5x NON grounded 1/4wave antenna!)
