Hi!
Well, I don't know. It might, but you have to consider
that the shield must perfectly cover the inner
conductor to shield it from the outside world.
Otherwise, it could become a big tank circuit and
explode in the presence of a lightning. Then it might
not. I have seen rolls of cable arch when a lightning
strikes, but I have never tried what your friend
suggest. Since you have RG-8, why dont yo try pulling
out the center conductor so you are left only with the
braid? I have done it with 9913F cable, of course, for
short lenghts (too expensive and difficult)! Lets see
if somebody else have done it!
