Well, between lightning strikes I (operating under the call sign AD7AN 3A
ID) operated six for our field day effort. I was in DN25 which is mostly
designated wilderness and probably few of you have on your logs. I was at
9000 feet on a rocky peak... not a good place to attach yourself to a 30
foot mast holding a yagi and part of a G5RV during numerous thunderstorms.
After a few hours of trying (and nearly getting zapped by lightning) K7VK
came in 59.
Making the exchange I asked him his location. He said DN25. hmm, strange,
I'm in DN25. come to find out, he was almost line of sight about 40-50
miles north. After swinging the beam around 180 to point at him he was
40 over. We chatted a couple times during the event. I was very surprised
to have another six operation in the area.
I got plenty of practice taking my mast and Yagi down and putting it back up
again as the storms passed... today though, for a couple hours this
morning I had a chance to work six without static crashes every few
seconds. It's nice to hear the band so alive.
I kept hearing people say "nice to finally have a good opening."
Every time I heard that I thought to myself... if this many people were on
six all the time, we'd have a lot more "openings."
Hopefully more people got interested in six this year and we'll have more
people on our favorite band. I was able to show off six quite a bit this
weekend, got one long time ham his first six meter contact... tnx to all
whom were at the receiving end of my RF.
Seven three all
p.s. I'll be activating the DN25 DN35 DN24 DN34 corner again a couple times
this year. Later in july. Anyone who wants those grids stay tuned, I'll
post to the list a couple days before then.
