[SixClub] High end 6 meter rigs (was: New to Six Meters)

I think you nailed it with the IC-7800, then ruled it out!
A lot of folks like the IC-756PROII on six, and the JST-245; however JRC has
such poor representation/service in the U.S., that I'd personally avoid it.
Last time I knew someone had to send one in for "factory service," it took
six months to get the rig back.
The TS60's very cute and I liked using one for some time, but it's so small
and menu-driven it finally drove me nuts. It would probably be my choice
for mobiling, though.
Personally, my fave 6m station (that I owned and used daily) was a Kenwood
TS-830S with an MMT 50/28S transverter, driving my grid-driven 4-1000A amp.
That provided 1200W PEP output with "ears" that could easily keep up with
the transmitting power, and all the features of the 830S that I liked a lot,
including VBT. I used that setup from about 1982-83 up until maybe 1995 or
so and it was pretty hard to beat. Today I use an FT-736R with intermediate
PA to drive the 4-1000A (the 736R is light on output, only 10W PEP), and
that's not bad, but the 830S/MMT combination was better.
Not sure about the FT650, don't think I've ever used one.
Still, antennas are far more important, of course. My "good" setup back
east was four stacked 5-L yagis in an H-frame and that darned system could
work meteor scatter pretty much 24/7/365, just point and call. With a
single 7-L today, and more mountainous obstructions, I can't do that. But I
miss it!

Steve WB2WIK/6

Thanks for the report Steve.
So what would others consider to be the best 6 meter
rigs out there, other than the Icom 7800? Some that I
have seen put forward as "The best 6 meter rig"
include:
Kenwood TS60
Yaesu FT650
Japan Radio Corp. JST-245
