True for ground wave and line of sight communication. 
But during Eskip, aurora, and meteors, polarization
doesn't matter because the ionosphere is already
flipping everything around.  I have made some nice
1000 mile plus QSOs using a 1/4 wave magmount whip
while mobile.  

Also make sure you have decent coax, as the loss at 6
meters can be kind of high with RG58 and RG8X.  I
would recommend RG8, RG213, or 9913 flex if you have a
run longer than 25 feet or so.
