you don't need luck you need a bloody miracle its not bad enough your 
shooting yourself in the foot by running FM simplex but running a 5 watt 
HT to boot? you would stand a better chance of winning the lottery
i would look in your area for a 6 meter repeater and stand by on it
or spend a little money and get a cheap SSB 6 meter rig even vertical 
would be better than FM the MUF doesnt get that high as often
the MFJ 9406 is a good cheap radio its 8-10 watts USB and its smallish 
so you can run it  mobile
