I think that your antenna is probably the most important part of your 
station.  If you drop all your money into an expensive 
transverter/receiver combo and then string a dipole up in your yard you 
will probably be disappointed.  Until a few weeks ago i used a 6m-70cm 
log periodic with forward gain of 6.5 dBi on 6m.  I switched to a 6m 5 
el beam with forward gain of 10.5.  I made almost as many Q's in the 
Jan VHF contest as I did in the June contest!  There was a huge 
difference in what I could hear (non prop enhanced).  If a 706 fits in 
your budget get it, but get a good preamp and a decent antenna and you 
will not be sorry.

In the end, all aspects of the station are important and every 
suggestion you get will be a good one.  The problem is that if you take 
everyones advice by the time you are done your 6m station will have 
cost $5000.
