Guys,
During this whole discussion, I haven't seen a mention to radiation angle
(or angle of radiation) That's one of the reasons why verticals are not good
for DX. I agree with the folks that mentioned polarization skewing or
shifting on stratosferic (SKIP) propagation. It doesn't really matter
whether you are on USB, LSB, AM, FM or CW. Similar polarization and a low
angle of radiation aid in long distance QSOs.
