[SixClub] Birdies?

I come from the "old school" or maybe it's just plain old, but to me the
term "birdies" refers to internally generated signals. I've had various
rigs over the years that were loaded with birdies. My Icom 751A has them in
abundance on 10 meters.

As to computers, I have two within 5 feet of the 6 meter rig. Actually it's
my HF rig and 6 meters, (an Icom 756 Pro and legal limit amp for HF). I do
not hear the computers and the unshielded CAT 5 cable runs down through the
floor with the coax cables. The hub which ties into the DSL line is about 3
feet from the radio. (The above is with the caveat that I have not operated
160 meters in this configuration-yet)

There certainly is noise in this room with two computers (Athlon XP 2.8 Gig
plus and an Athlon 2.0 XP Plus) their associated fans and a dust
filter/collector, but as you've surmised it's fan noise. Course I don't have
to worry about the TV or some one in other parts of the house making noise
to bother the radio.

In the shop the 751A sits within three inches of the 19 inch monitor and the
tower case sits right beside an old Henry 2K-4. The 50 watt duoband UHF/VHF
rig sits atop of the 751. In here the duobander is only about 16 inches
from the hub and DSL hook up.

OTOH this room is no place for an HT as it develops an acute case of
deafness. The coax and shielding keeps the noise out of the other rigs.
However there is a paging system some where in the area that comes in on
147.6 which is the input to the local repeater (wide area coverage).

I think I have to side with Richard. If you shut off everything and run off
battery power you can be fairly certain it's internal...to a point.
Disconnect the coax and hook up a dummy load. That will answer the question
once and for all.
