Yeah but higher in freq (2Ghz or higher) where the antenna gain is MUCH
larger...I'm sure it was FM because of the easier power budgets vs AM...
When the astronauts were on the moon, they talked through the LEM back
to earth; not straight from their suits....and the LEM just had to talk
to probably a 60ft or larger dish...at 2 Ghz, a 10ft dish has 30db or so
of gain...I cannot even begin to imagine the gain at 60ft!
But some folks even heard the command module in orbit around the moon on
its downlink freq with no problem using small dishes and homebrew
rcvrs...I recall an article in 1970s QST describing how one group did it..
