remember that from

West to East the first letters run with C-D-E-F
South to North the second letters run L-M-N-

This is just like the interstate highway system.  
The odd numbers run low to high West to East
The even numbers run low to high South to North

Pacific coast begins with C (for the most part)
The mountain states and western plains begin with D
The of the Mississippi valley states begin E
New England begins with F
