Hi!

First, you do need an instrument (SWR meter, antenna
analyzer, etc...) to check the performance of the
antenna. For 6 meters, my experience is that the
antenna is everything. I use a home made 1/4 wave
mobile antenna that have been working very fine for
me. The only problem I see with a bigger antenna and
an HT is that the HTs are very prone to
intermodulation (at least the VX-5, IC-T8). To your
surprise, many of the listed 6 meter repeaters are not
operational.
