Hi the G5RV I used a few years ago was the shorter
one that is only 50 foot. I hadnt even planned on
using it at the time on 6 but just happened to be
listening on it and found the guys in conversation. I
made contact with one and it followed right after the
other.I only mentioned this since I noticed someone
mentioning using 40 meter dipoles on 6 meters.
It was a surprise to me as I didnt think I would
get that far North with the dipole. In a few months I
went out an bought my first 6 meter antenna for this.
And began by listen for beacons and once I heard one
began calling CQ on the band. Getting usually a
response in a few minutes. In the many opening I was
able to do I had maybe 50 to 60 Ja's.
Following days I was working Ja,HL,VR,and BG later
followed by the VU2 and a JT. But this last year the
only thing I seemed to be able to hear on the radio
was increase in noise and then total drop outs. It was
like this for days and then one morning heard VR2 and
worked 3 stations.
I also listen on 6m FM but there is no one to work
on this as few even operate it. Its total silence for
hours.
In the summer months there the bands drop down low
and in our fall months it starts to increase, like for
example 40 meters goes almost dead at times in May and
80 meters is rare. Its totally dead at times.
