David, if you have battery-operated portable 6m SSB gear and you'll be in
Palm Springs later this month, consider taking your stuff portable using the
tram that goes up the mountain.  Palm Springs itself is in a valley, for
sure, but the top of the tram is 3000m above sea level and has a 100+ mile
horizon...and it's an easy ride.  Using an old IC-502 (3W PEP, battery
operated, only telescoping whip antenna) it's easy to work three states +
Mexico, and about 20 grids, under normal (no openings) band conditions from
there.  With a portable beam, you'd do better.  -WB2WIK/6
